With the globalization of economy,the usage of English for Science and Technology(EST)has increased significantly,and the demand for translation of EST has also increased.EST for electric power is playing an increasingly important role in international exchanges.Distribution network is part of electric system.Nominalization refers to the grammatical process of converting verbs,adjectives,etc.into nouns through certain methods such as affixing and transformation.EST is about facts or characteristics of movements and techniques,paying attention to abstract logical thinking.Therefore,nominal structure is more consistent with the needs of scientific and technical personnel.Nominal structure has the characteristics of large information capacity,clear logical relationship,conciseness and so on,so it is widely used in EST.This Report is based on the translation task assigned by a translation company.The source text is the eighth chapter of Re-powering Markets —— an official publication of International Energy Agency(IEA).The original text is about 10,000 words.This Report consists of seven chapters.And the main methodology in this Report is quantitative analysis and qualitative analysis.According to different situations,the translations of nominal structures are analyzed either quantitatively or qualitatively.Chapter 1 of this Report provides an overview of the reasons for the topic,text source,translation requirements,text features,methodology and structure of this Report.Chapter 2introduces the pre-translation preparations.ABBYY Fine Reader is used for character recognition of the original text which is in the format of.pdf.Also pre-processing is conducted with Trados Studio.Chapter 3 introduces the process of translation,including creation of new termbase and new translation memory,editing of target segments,on-the-fly addition of terms,and post-translation quality assurance.Chapter 4,based on the methodology of qualitative analysis,analyzes several translation techniques of nominal structure.According to the logical relationship and constitution of a sentence,the terms and expressions of EST,as well as the language characteristics and style of Chinese,nominal structure may be translated into a parallel structure(binglie jiegou),an attributive structure(pianzheng jiegou),a predicate-object structure(dongbin jiegou),a subject-predicate structure(zhuwei jiegou),a subject-object structure(jianyu jiegou)or an independent clause in Chinese,so as to fulfill task requirements,ensure translation accuracy and make the translation more consistent with the expression style of Chinese.Inaddition,in order to improve the translation techniques and ensure the quality of translation,Chapter 5,based on the methodology of quantitative analysis,inquires and analyzes the possible translations of some sentences.The subjects interviewed,differing in terms of profession and language level,are from many walks of life.Although the conclusion drawn from the questionnaire may be limited or arbitrary,the true purpose of this chapter is to provide a new perspective and method for translation teaching and translators.Chapter 6 compares the translator's translation with the final proofread translation,and analyzes the inadequacies and causes of the translator's translation and the possible ways for improvement.Due to the translator's lack of professional knowledge of electric power,misunderstanding and poor sense of Chinese language and other reasons,the translation appears to be stiff,obscure in logic,and repeated in information,and lose some small but important information.After proof-reading,some translation expressions were modified to ensure the correctness and properness of translation.Chapter 7 is the conclusion of this Report.This Report makes a detailed analysis and discussion of the translation of nominal structures in EST,and draws some regular conclusions,which are of significance for other translation practioners and instructive for the translation teaching of EST.However,this Report still has some deficiencies and is short of systematic theoretical support.
