The translation material selected in this report is excerpted from the best-selling novel Love and Ruin written by American writer Paula McLain. This fiction is unfolded against the Spanish Civil War.It portrays an independent and courageous female image. Therefore, the translation of this fiction into Chinese not only helps Chinese readers to better understand the Second World War,but also helps to develop the feminism in China. The author translates the literary work Love and Ruin into Chinese following the Interpretive Theory of Translation proposed by Danica Seleskovitch. The theory emphasizes there is a stage of sense generation in the translation process, that is,the generation of sense after comprehension. The reformulation in the target language ought to be based on the sense, not merely the form of the original text. The two major concepts of the Interpretation Theory are Sense Equivalence and the Triangular Model.Sense Equivalence is the principle of interpretive translation, including cognitive equivalence and emotional equivalence. The Triangular Model illustrates translators'cognitive process, including comprehension, deverbalization, and reformulation. The principle of Sense Equivalence runs through the whole translation process. This report uses the two core concepts of the Interpretation Theory to analyze the typical examples of the translator's literary translation. This report expounds the application of Sense Equivalence from cognitive equivalence and emotional equivalence. Also it analyses the combination of the Triangle Model and the translation practice at the lexical level, the syntactic level and the discourse level. This report finds the translation study can be combined with other disciplines and further verifies the feasibility of the Interpretation Theory in literary translation. In literary translation, the translator ought to fully mobilize his/her own relevant background knowledge and take the contextual information into consideration,so as to obtain an accurate understanding of the original text. After the sense is produced, the translator does not stick to the original form;the sense ought to be expressed with fluent expressions in the target language. This report also further enriches the application of the Interpretation Theory to literary translation.
