In recent years,China has strengthened its investment and efforts in special education and its legal system has been improving. However, despite years of effort, compared with Western countries great gap still exists in China's special education.Special education plays a key role in the national education. The source text of this translation project comes from Part One,A Broken System,in the book The Quest for Meaningful Special Education. This part is based on the educational journey of nine students.Their present situation and teaching methods of special education are stated, and the thesis also probes the cause of educational gap. With Hans J.Vermeer's Skopos Theory as a guidance, this translation report analyzes the difficult points from three levels — vocabulary, syntax and discourse. In terms of vocabulary, methods like amplification and omission are adopted by the translator to reasonably add and simplify the works of translation. At the level of syntax, the translator applies literal translation, free translation, splitting and combined translation to divide the long sentences and adjust the word order on the basis of its structure. Finally, for the whole text, the translator analyzes the translation work from the perspective of cohesion and coherence.Through the translation of this source text,it can introduce the western special education system and share the successful experience of special education. And this report can transmit western progressive ideas and provide some reference and guidance for China's special education.
