Metacognition includes two parts: monitoring and control.During studying, metacognition helps us to assess the degree of learning and effectively adjust the learning strategies to optimize learning efficiency. In real life,It's significant for learners to assess their mastery of knowledge, which depends not only on conscious thinking processes and rational thinking, but also on experience feelings, such as perceptual fluency.Previous studies have mainly used word as metarial to explored the impact of perceptual fluency on metacognitive monitoring. However, previous studies neglected that whether the picture perceptual fluency influences metacognitive monitoring;and whether picture perceptual fluency affects metacognitive control(such as time allocation)in limited time. Therefore, this study focuses on the impact of perceptual fluency on metacognition monitoring and control, and whether this effect will be masked in multiple study-test trials. This study mainly consists of two experiments.Experiment 1 allows the participants to learn and make judgment under the condition of fixed pace.Specifically,Experiment 1A is a single factor design, aiming to investigate whether the perceptual fluency will lead to the difference in metacognitive monitoring;Experiment 1B is a 2(perceptual fluency: fluent, disfluent)× 2(trial: trial 1,trial 2)within-participants design,In order to investigate whether the influence of perceptual fluency on metacognitive monitoring is stable during several study-test trials.Experiment 2 allows the participants to allocate study time in limited time.Specifically,Experiment 2A is a one-factor experimental design in order to investigate whether the perceptual fluency would lead to differences in metacognitive control;in experiment 2B,participants also have to allocate time under repeated learning in order to investigated whether the influence of perceptual fluency on metacognitive control is stable. The conclusions of the two experiments are as follows:(1)Perceptual fluency affects metacognitive monitoring when only one study-test trial is performed;however, when study-test trials are performed twice, the influence of perceptual fluency on metacognitive monitoring disappears, indicating that the influence of perceptual fluency on metacognitive monitoring is not stable.(2)In experiment 1B,participants overestimate their JOL during first study-test trial while underestimate their JOL during second study-test trial, which called underconfidence with practice effect.(3)Under limited study time conditions, perceptual fluency affects metacognitive control when only one study-test trial is performed;however, when study-test trial are performed twice, study time gap decreases with the trial, indicating that the influence of perceptual fluency on metacognitive control is not stable.
