On Overcoming The Intercultural Communicative Barriers In Chinese-English Guide Interpreting From The Perspective Of Relevance Theory

With the development of the world economy and people's living standards,tourism has witnessed a great prosperity never seen before in the world.People all over the world are not just confined to their own country,but also pursue a brandnew travel style to see the world.Under the wave of prosperity of the world tourism,China is not far behind,and Xi'an has become one of the shining stars in domestic tourism.Xi'an,the ancient capital of thirteen dynasties,boasts its rich cultural heritage and abundant tourism resources,attracting more and more foreign tourists in the world.In this connection,guide interpreting plays an extremely important role in this process,which can help foreign tourists better learn about Xi'an.However,it is not easy to achieve good communication in the process of interpreting.Guide interpreters must be capable of dealing with both linguistic and intercultural communicative barriers.Only by doing this,the communicative activity can be regarded as a success.Relevance Theory was put forward by D.Sperber and D.Wilson in the 1980s.According to Relevance Theory,verbal communication has two ostensive-inferential processes in interpreting.Guide interpreting is a verbally intercultural communicative behavior in which guide interpreters play a dual role.They are not only the receivers of information,forming their own cognition based on ostensive-inferential process,but also the transmitters of information,transmitting the digested information to listeners.But unlike other types of interpreters,guide interpreters are more focused on the second ostensive-inferential process.Guide interpreters should attach great importance to the relevance of information,pay attention to the social context,cultural context and cognitive context of foreign tourists,and enable them to obtain the maximal cognitive effect with the least processing effort,achieving the optimal relevance.Taking cultural guide interpreting in Xi'an for example,this thesis attempts to find proper solutions to overcome intercultural communicative barriers in guide interpreting from the perspective of Relevance Theory.Meanwhile,it puts forward some requirements to guide interpreters,making the quality of interpreting into another high level.This thesis firstly explains the definition and characteristics of guide interpreting and intercultural communication.Then it analyzes the intercultural communicative barriers in guide interpreting and proposes some effective solutions from the perspective of Relevance Theory.At the same time,some corresponding requirements are set to guide interpreters.Finally,it is concluded that Relevance Theory has great significance in overcoming the intercultural communicative barriers in guide interpreting and the solutions proposed on different occasions are quiet practical and feasibe.
