This report is based on the translation of Freshwater Challenges of South Africa and its Upper Vaal River which features as scientific style with complicated sentences,compact structure and logic cohesion.In addition,English and Chinese have a great difference in cohesive devices.English puts stress on hypotaxis while Chinese prefers parataxis,so cohesion in English is more explicit than in Chinese and English connectives are more than those in Chinese.Therefore,translators are greatly challenged by characteristics of scientific style and differences in English and Chinese cohesive devices.Thus,it is very important to make use of appropriate translation methods to correctly and coherently express textual information and conform to target readers' reading habits.With the guidance of cohesion theory put forward by Halliday and Hasan,this paper adopts research methods of comparative study,example analysis and discourse analysis and tries to explore translation methods for EST discourse translation.Because of great differences in English and Chinese cohesive devices such as grammatical cohesion and lexical cohesion,the writer first deepens study for cohesion theory through literature reading and has further understanding for differences in English and Chinese cohesive devices combining with parallel texts.Based on the understanding of discourse features and semantic meanings,this paper analyzes concrete translated examples paying much attention to the connectives in source text and their corresponding cohesive devices so as to explore suitable translation methods.The results of this paper show that the translation techniques of EST such as reference,adding connectives and omitting connectives can achieve textual cohesion in E-C EST translation to make translation more coherent and readable and accord with Chinese expression.
