This is a report on E-C consecutive interpreting without text.Based on the Communicative Translation Theory,this report analyzes the difficulties in this project and gives practical suggestions.The video material of this report is called The Science of Acupuncture which is from BBC.As one of the alternative medicines,Traditional Chinese Medicine(TCM)exerts increasing influence nowadays.Although many people are skeptical about the effect of Traditional Chinese Medicine,more and more people are trying to understand this ancient treatment.In this video,Kathy Sykes,a British scientist,tries to find the scientific basis of acupuncture through medical experiments.According to Newmark,the text of this kind of documentary displays the characteristics of Informative Text and Vocative Text.Informative texts attach importance to the presentation of content and vocative texts are reader-centered.And Communicative Translation focuses on readers,emphasizing the real communicative effect.Therefore,it is appropriate to interpret this documentary under the guidance of Communicative Translation Theory.This report consists of five chapters,namely introduction,project description,difficulties,solutions,and conclusion.And the interpreting difficulties of this material mainly lie in the interpreting of terminology and abbreviation,colloquial expressions as well as professional knowledge and long sentences.Under the guidance of Communicative Translation Theory,this report concludes the corresponding solutions to the difficulties mentioned above.Through case analysis,this report proves the feasibility and applicability of Communicative Translation Theory in guiding such kind of documentary interpreting.It is also suggested that interpreters should improve the ability,enrich the background knowledge and attach importance to pre-interpreting preparation.
