On The Translation Of Children's Literature From The Perspective Of Skopos Theory

The thesis is a report on the translation practice of the children's literature An Eagle in the Snow,written by British children's book author,Michael Morpurgo.The book is about a legendary story a little boy Barney heard on the train to the countryside during the World War II.The author describes the crimes of wars with vivid and humorous language and expresses his yearning for peace.Children's literature plays an important role in children's growth,not only enriches their knowledge,but also has an educational function.The thesis applies Skopos theory to practice and illustrates how to translate children's literature by analyzing some examples.Skopos Theory is one of the most important functionalist approaches to translation.The first rule of it is the Skopos rule,which means a translational action is determined by its purpose.All that writers of children's literature need to do is to serve child readers' needs,which conforms to the Skopos rule.That's the reason why the thesis applies this theory.The thesis discusses some difficulties in the translation and solutions to these difficulties in detail with cases.As to the translation of children's literature,three kinds of difficulties are mentioned.First is how to meet the requirements for interest and here are three solutions,the use of rhetoric devices,onomatopoeia and reduplicated words;second is how to meet the requirements for readability and here are two solutions,colloquial expression and simplifying long sentences;third is dealing with cultural differences and here are two solutions,the use of footnotes and domestication strategy.
