As a great realist work,Vanity Fair has many vivid figures.Among them,Becky is the most classic character in the novel. For the depiction of Becky's image, the fictional dialogue is indispensable. From a person's speech,we can know that his or her thoughts and feelings.Fictional dialogue can not only show the character's identity and personality intuitively but also indicate the subtle psychological activities of the characters. The readers can feel Becky's image from the purpose, psychology, feelings, attitudes in her conversations with different characters in different situations. Therefore, when translating the character's dialogue, the image of the character should be accurately reproduced,so that the target readers and the original readers can have the same feelings about the character's image.Based on Nida's Dynamic Equivalence Theory,Jin Di explores a literary translation theory centered on effect equivalence, combined with his translation practice.Jin Di's Equivalent Effect Translation Theory mainly includes three concepts: the concept of recipient, the concept of effect and the concept of equivalence.Among them, the concept of effect is the core of the theory.Jin Di believes that only by using the effect as the target of translation can it be possible to achieve the unity of “faithfulness, expressiveness and spirit”.Based on the Equivalent Effect Translation Theory of Jin Di,this thesis adopts descriptive method to discuss whether Becky's image is reproduced in the dialogue translation of Vanity Fair by Yang Bi from the three functions of dialogue translation, which are: 1)dialogue translation indicates Becky's identity;2)dialogue translation reflects Becky's personality;3)dialogue translation implies Becky's psychology.Through research,it is found that in the dialogue translation,in order to make the target readers and the original readers have the same feelings about the Becky's image,Yang Bi employs the addition, shift, division, the choice of words and the extension of word meanings, affirmation and handling of special forms of English and punctuation to make Becky's identity, personality and psychological activities well reproduced.
