Vanity Fair, a masterpiece of Thackeray’s, is one of the outstanding representatives of English Critical realism. This novel is rather unique because of its characteristics of culture, time, writing style and so on. As a result, it embraces many difficulties to translate it. Vanity Fair enjoys several Chinese translations done by different people, among which Yang Bi’s version is referred to as the most highly regarded and influential one. Her translating operations are greatly appreciated and admired by a lot of people. It is believed that the way she handles the translatability of this literary work is worth learning from. This paper contrasts the differences between Yang Bi’s Chinese version of Vanity Fair and that of the reporter to discuss the obstacles that the cultural differences bring to its translation. By summarizing Yang Bi’s translation strategies of various kinds of cultural phenomena and her approaches, the reporter wishes to improve the understanding of translatability.
