Vanity Fair is the masterpiece of Thackeray, who is the prominent English novelist in the nineteenth century. The characters in it are molded by the author through vivid description, irony, satire and especially the dialogues in the fiction. Therefore, in translating Vanity Fair into Chinese, the analysis of dialogues plays the crucial role for the translator. Then, what's the successful translation of the dialogue?Since fictional dialogue is a special form of art, it includes not only information used to communicate, but also the aesthetic values that can help readers evaluate and reveal the characteristics of characters and the theme of fiction. The adequate reproduction of these aesthetic values in the dialogue can lead the translator to be successful. Ms. Yang Bi's Chinese version of Vanity Fair enjoys a well-established fame in translation circle and has obtained profound positive comment. Therefore, after picking out all the dialogues in Vanity Fair, this research tends to interpret the aesthetic values in the dialogues of Vanity Fair and analyzes the reproduction of them in Yang Bi's version at different levels, at an evaluation of the significances of translation aesthetics to the translation of fictional dialogue, with the aim of showing that translation aesthetics can be a means to fuller understanding and aesthetic reproductin of the artistic achievement in fictional dialogue translation.First the aesthetic study of the dialogues in general in Vanity Fair is analyzed into two parts-study of characteristics of the dialogues, and study of aesthetic values of the dialogues, which is the basis of the fictional dialogue translation of Vanity Fair. Then, we should try to dig out the objective as well as subjective factors on Yang Bi's decision of the strategies of aesthetic translation. And the aesthetic reproduction in dialogue translation of Yang Bi's version as well as the translation methods used by Yang Bi are elaborated at different levels. Lastly, the thesis tries to summaries Yang Bi's aesthetic principles in dialogue translation and their significance to fictional dialogue translation.It is supposed that the aesthetic equivalence represents the final purpose of the fictional dialogue transation, and the means of aesthetic values is a useful way to achieve aesthetic equivalence. In order to make both the readers of source language text and target language text have the same appreciation and experience, the primary task for the translator is to reproduce the aesthetic values. It is argued that from the analysis of aesthetic values in Vanity Fair and Yang Bi's reproduction of them, three main principles are adopted by Yang Bi:dynamic imitation, implicit and explicit, general and specific.Therefore, this thesis aims to draw people's attention to an overlook territory when studying fictional dialogue translation-translation aesthetics. In fictional dialogue translation, the aesthetic values of the original ought to be transferred to let the target language reader have similar aesthetic experience. What's more, translation aesthetics offers an appropriate perspective to translation criticism.
