| The purpose and function of popular science readings are to publicize and popularize scientific knowledge,thus the characteristics of them,compared with other literary works,are rather obvious: they are of scientificity,literariness,interestingness and popularity.It is these characteristics that make translating popular science particularly complicated.This report is based on the translation of the first four chapters of a piece of popular science masterpiece on physics,The Order of Time.The report contains two parts.The first part is the body part,consisting of five chapters.Chapter 1 is introduction to the translation task.Chapter 2is task description,including reasons for the translation task,contents of the source text,description of the language features and text type of the source text,and finally the introduction of communicative translation strategy.Chapter 3 is process description,containing the preparatory work done for the translation,process of translating and proofreading and revision.Chapter 4,case analysis,is the core part of the whole paper.This chapter focuses on translation of technical terms and complex sentences and presents the translator's difficulties and solutions.Chapter 5 is conclusion,concluding what the translator has achieved and analyzing the limitations of the report.The second part of the report is Appendixes,including source text and translated text,and terms.Under the guidance of Peter Newmark's communicative translation strategy,the translator proposes his own translation of terms;and from the syntactic level he analyzes the position of different parentheses;and he uses such methods as adjustment of word order,segmentation,repetition and supplement to translate complex sentences.This translation practice suggests that the communicative translation strategy is applicable to the translation of popular science readings.Though there are limitations in this paper,the translator expects to offer references to the translation of popular science. |
