In recent years,China is under a strong momentum of economic development.Meanwhile,we have increased exchanges with other countries, especially in science and technology. As a medium of scientific communication, the importance of popular science translation is rising increasingly.Science popularization is to popularize scientific and technological knowledge;that is to say,the promulgation of scientific knowledge shall be performed in simple words, the way that is easy to accept and understand for the public. It is required that in translation, the translator should not only spread scientific knowledge precisely to reflect the rigor of science, but also pay attention to popularity and interestingness of the language. The thesis is a translation practice report, and the project is excerpted from the book,The Living Cosmos, written by Chris Impey. The book belongs to the popular science text.In the process of translation, the first priority is to convey the content of the original text accurately, and then to improve text readability(namely not let the reader feel boring). The author excerpts part of the seventh chapter of this book. The selected texts mainly introduce the human exploration of extraterrestrial civilizations, which involve substantial knowledge of astronomy, astrophysics, and astrobiology.Because of the lack of relevant knowledge, the author encountered many problems in translation. In order to address these difficulties, the author adopted the translation techniques of extension, transformation of sentence elements, amplification and omission based on Newmark's communicative translation theory. It is hoped that the thesis can be used as a reference for similar texts translating when the scientific knowledge is conveyed.
