Elizabeth Black's Pragmatic Stylistics is a monograph on pragmatic stylistics.Prag7matic stylistics,in a nutshell,is a branch of stylistics that studies how to apply pragmatic theories to the literary text analysis and interpretation(of course, these analyses and interpretations can also provide feedback for the development of pragmatics). In this book,Black not only summarizes the classic pragmatic theories, such as speech act theory, cooperative principles, politeness principles, and the important role of relevance theory on the interpretation of novels, but also interprets rhetorical devices such as metaphor, irony, parody and symbolism from the perspective of pragmatics. She connects the echo discourse in relevance theory with Bakhtin's heteroglossia theory creatively, and analyses the recombination of narrative voice and stylistic effect of narrative sound in the novel style.Pragmatic Stylistics has an important reference value for expanding and deepening the study of pragmatic stylistics in domestic. The translator chooses the eighth chapter of this book as the text of the translation practice. This chapter mainly discusses the application and manifestation of several rhetorical devices such as metaphor, irony and parody in literary works. The text of this translation practice is academic, with many professional terms, formal language, and complex sentence structure, which bring a great challenge to the translator. This translation report, guided by Catford's translation theory, analyzes the translation of chapter 8,and discusses the four major phenomena of the translation shift in terms of lexical and syntactic level:level shift, structure shift, class shift and unit shift. This report aims to find an ideal translation method under its guidance,so as to solve the problems in translation, present the information of the original text to the maximum extent, and then improve the translation quality of academic works. This translation practice report includes five chapters.Chapter one is the introduction, which introduces the background, objectives, features and significance of the translation practice.Chapter two is the description of the translation process, which describes the whole translation process in three stages:pre-translation preparation,while-translation description and post-translation description. It ensures the smooth progress of the translation project.Chapter three explains the basic content of Catford's translation theory and its applicability in this practice.Chapter four is the most important part of this practice report, which focuses on case analysis by selecting appropriate translation methods in combination with translation shift theory.Through typical case analysis, the application of translation shift theory in this practice is reflected in detail, and the corresponding translation methods are summarized to explore the translation effects.Chapter five is the conclusion. The translator summarizes her gains in this translation practice, and points out the limitations and reflects on them.At last, she indicates that this translation practice will play an important role in her future translation work.
