| Nowadays, the differences between the sexes and the relationship between humans and animals have attracted much attention, which often lead to people’s discussion. If You’re Not Yet Like Me,a romantic but satirical black comedy, covers both of these hot issues. The book consists of two short stories in 14,772 words. The translation process of the whole book has been guided by Catford’s translation shift theory, aiming to explore the applicability of this theory in literary translation. There were some problems in the translation practice: the neglect of the translation of tense and singular and plural information;the lack of complete equivalent words in English and Chinese;the difficulty in choosing attributives position and adjusting words order;the difficulty in the translation of long sentences. The use of two shift methods in translation shift theory, level shift and category shift, has solved the four problems from the lexical level and sentence level respectively, and improvement was reflected in the translation quality, which proved the effectiveness of Catford’s translation shift theory in guiding literary translation.Through this translation practice, the following conclusions can be drawn: for the translation of tenses and singular and plural, level shift can be used to convert them into corresponding expressions of Chinese time and quantities;category shift can be used to convert the part of speech and the position of attributive for words and long modifiers which are difficult to be translated;long sentences can be divided flexibly by category shift. The practice has proved that the translated version is more in accordance with Chinese expression. It is hoped that these conclusions cannot only provide references for other translators, but also enrich the applied research of translation shift theory. At the same time,it is hoped that other scholars will study and solve the textual shift problems not involved in translation shift theory as soon as possible.Figure 0;Table 0;Reference 37... |
