Research On Explanations Of "Expressing Ideals With Poems" By Eight Modern Literary Masters

As far as the study of poetic theories in ancient China is concerned,as the “earliest guideline for China's poetics”(by Zhu Ziqing),“expressing ideals with poems” is an unavoidable topic for later scholars.Since Han Dynasty,explanations of “expressing ideals with poems” have constantly deepened and expanded together with the development of the time.The academic history in the 20 th century started to explain “expressing ideals with poems” since the 1920 s and 1930 s.Representatives are Chen Zhongfan,Guo Shaoyu,Zhu Dongrun,Fang Xiaoyue,Luo Genze,Wen Yiduo,Zhu Ziqing,and Zhu Guangqian,or what we call the eight modern literary masters.In this thesis,these eight modern literary masters have been roughly divided into two schools,Emotion School and Integrated School.On the whole,the Emotion School represented by Chen Zhongfan,Guo Shaoyu,Zhu Dongrun and Fang Xiaoyue closely combines “ideals” with “emotion”,and believes that poems are the truth explicit demonstration of the soul of poets,thus creating the tradition of expressing emotion.These four scholars' explanations share some similarities and minute differences.The Integrated School represented by Luo Genze,Wen Yiduo,Zhu Ziqing,and Zhu Guangqian offers diversified explanations on “expressing ideals with poems”.Wen Yiduo explains “ideal” as memory,record,and hug.Zhu Ziqing believes that “ideal” has something to do with politics and education.Zhu Guangqian stresses both emotion and reason.Luo Genze takes a neutral position with no bias.When reflecting on the explanations on “expressing ideals with poems” by the eight modern literary masters,we should not only understand that the movement “Sorting out Chinese Classics” has pushed forward scholars' extensive discussion on “expressing ideals with poems”,but also pay attention to the interpretation characteristics and limitations of each of the eight modern literary masters respectively.In fact,the connotation of “ideal” is the integration of cognition,emotion,and will.As for “cognition”,the meaning of “expressing ideals with poems” is to state knowledge;as for “emotion”,the meaning of “expressing ideals with poems” is to express emotion;as for “will”,“expressing ideals with poems” is the willingness to express reason.In summary,the illustrations by the eight modern literary masters have all injected brand-new time concepts into the explanations on “expressing ideals with poems”,and endowed the ancient poetics theme “expressing ideals with poems” with new connotations,not only activating the theme,but also exerting a profound impact on later generations.
