A Study Of Prose In Modern Women’s School Periodicals(1900-1919)

Under the historical background of "National Salvation" and "Intiating Women’s School Education",modern female schools were founded one after another.In order to publicize the educational aims of the school,the periodicals of female schools have been put on the stage of history.The emergence of the female school periodicals had provided a wide space for the creation of modern intellectual women,then poetry,prose and fiction written by female students began to appear in large numbers.This paper chooses some prose from Reporting and Huibao as the research objects to emphatically analyzes the features of "female students" and "female consciousness awakening" displayed in the prose,and then analyses the close relationship between the contents of modern female school periodicals and "May 4th Movement".This paper consists of four parts:The first part briefly introduces the historical background of Jiangsu Second Women’s Normal School and Zhili First Women’s Normal School and the general situation of the periodicals they set up.In view of the numerous prose articles in the periodicals,the paper are classified by the style of prose,so as to grasp the gist of the prose chosen from Reporting and Huibao as a whole.In the second part,since Reporting and Huibao are periodicals founded by female schools which clearly reflect the distinct characteristics of female students.This part analyzes their characteristics from the following three aspects: the study and life of female students,the national sentiments of female students and the travel writings of female students.In the third part,the prose in the periodicals of female school presents distinct female consciousness.Modern female students used the sharp weapon "pen pole" to integrate their ideas and feelings into their own creation unconsciously.This part mainly elaborates the strong female consciousness shown in female school periodical prose from the following three aspects: striving for freedom of love and marriage,pursuing economic independence,improving their professional skills,and striving for the right to receive formal education in schools.The fourth part mainly discusses the relationship between the content of modern female school periodicals and "May 4th Movement".This part firstly studies the importance offemale schools during the May 4th Movement and the influence of some female students,such as Ling Shuhua and Xu Guangping.Secondly,according to the social activities and creations of the female students during the May 4th Movement,this part analyses the value of modern female school periodicals,so as to provide a new perspective for comprehensively understanding the female writers during the May 4th Movement.The concluding part summarizes the points of above parts.
