A Corpus-Based Study On Translation Of Terms In Chinese Legal Texts Related To Energy And Electric Power

In the late 1990s,Professor Mona Baker introduced corpus into translation study.After more than two decades,corpus translation study has attracted more and more attention and been applied to many aspects.Though some of the studies are concerned with legal English translation,and some are based on the corpus way of studying,few of them is related to the legal texts of energy and electric power.This thesis aims at establishing a small corpus database on legal texts of energy and electric power by collecting data of three typical laws in the field with the help of the corpus tools.At the same time,the data are analyzed within and out of the relevant texts of corpus respectively,and compared with the text materials in the control group,so as to find out some potential language rules in the law texts of energy and electric power.Then after the features are concluded,the checking job is conducted in the Parallel Corpus of China's Law Documents online,confirming what we have obtained in the process of study.It is found in the research that there are both similarities and differences between the legal words in the English texts of energy and electric power and other legal words in the English texts.The similarities are mainly manifested in terms of noun terms,verb phrases,compound prepositions,personal pronouns,adjectives,adverbs and even the coordination structures,while the differences are found in the use of prescriptive terms and descriptive terms.It can be seen that in legal English texts of energy and electric power,exclusive terms of the field oecur at a lower rate than the structural words and phrases involved.Legal English law of energy and electric power has its own words and phrases and even the sentence patterns.In addition,by studying the legal terms in this field in a corpus way based on actual use of language,some customs and features of legal English can be firmly grasped by the learners and practitioners in this field,guiding practice with theory.Also,the glossary generated from corpus can be taken full advantage of to enrich the vocabulary and promote the accumulation of professional terms in this area with more research methods and ideas involved,so as to provide more targeted guidance and help for better references and enlightenment of the study on legal translation for specific purposes.
