The rapid development of science and technology in this century has given rise to a large number of scientific and technological texts. This report is based on the translation of the book The Ideal Soil 2014:A Handbook for the New Agriculture v2.0,which introduces a kind of New Agriculture system mode under which minerals necessary for making ideal soil is discussed so as to improve agriculture, horticulture and gardening practices, build a healthy, sustainable agricultural development pattern and further promote the rapid and stable development of agriculture. The translator chooses Chapter One,Nine and Ten of this book as the source text for Enghsh-Chinese translation practice. This report briefly introduces the background, significance, feature of the text and translation standard of informative text, and then describes the translation process in detail.Focusing on the differences between English and Chinese, the translator discusses the difficulties in translation from three aspects:lexicon, syntax and discourse(the understanding of agricultural vocabulary, processing sentences, and textual cohesive devices). At lexical level, the specialization of common vocabulary is mainly dealt with by means of word meaning extension. At syntactic level, the translator mainly adopts the method of division to deal with the translation of long sentences, and also sumlarizes the translation skills of passive sentences. At discourse level, repetition and omission are mainly used to ensure the cohesion of the target text.Furthermore, the translator draws inspiration from this translation practice. In the translation of informative text, the translator should master relevant professional knowledge. In addition to searching and reading parallel texts, the translator needs to understand language features or differences between the source language and the target language before the initiation of translation task.Only in this way can the translator truly solve translation problems caused by differences in language habits. What's more, the appropriate use of translation methods or skills can guarantee the feasibility and readability of the translation work.
