This translation report is based on the book Managing Soil Quality Challenges in Modern Agriculture, and the project belongs to English-Chinese translation, and is launched by the professor Yang Xue-yun from the Northwest Agriculture and Forestry University. With the development of modern agriculture, a large number of fertilizers and the use of chemicals result in great damage on soil quality. Soil quality problem not only causes great losses on agriculture, but also has a great relationship with concerns on our food safety. It is imperative to improve the soil quality. The book introduces a series of basic concepts of soil quality, and measures on how to improve soil quality in details, which has important reference value for the soil quality of China. The report records the translation preparation, translation, evaluation and reflection after translation. Before translation, the author analyzes the objectives and requirements of the project and collects reference material associated with the original text; next, the author analyzes the linguistic characteristics of the source text, which includes the lexical features and syntactic features. The project requires that the target function is consistent with original function, which is to guide the technical personnel for the soil improvement, so the author determines to use the functional equivalence theory as the guiding theory; then, the author selects the appropriate translation methods which include reconstruction, omission and addition, conversion, elimination of passive voice, repetition, literal and liberal translation according to the analysis of the language features and functional equivalence theory. After completing the translation, the author presented a qualified translation to the truster. After that, the truster assesses the author's hard work of four months and the translated version. The final version meets the requirement of the truster. Finally, after this practice, the author puts forward her own proposals to MTI students based on her experience.
