Appellations play an important role in both written and spoken language.They are involved in lots of social information including age,occupation,identity and status.Appellations arising from different culture backgrounds will be restricted in many aspects when used during communication process.These restricted appellations are appellation taboos,which reveal the customs and values of different countries.Therefore,there are several differences among different countries' appellation taboo culture,which influences communication efficiency among people from different cultural backgrounds.Culture teaching is necessary for Teaching Chinese to Speakers of Other Languages.The culture that is contained in widely used appellations taboos during communication process should appeal to teachers and students' enough attention,such as "dalaga" and"moor" in Filipino and "xiaojie" and "tongzhi" in Chinese,because appellation taboos may cause misunderstanding or conflict during Cross-cultural Communication process.In view of it,the article will discuss Philippine appellation taboos from the perspective of Cross-cultural Communication.It will also take Xavier School for an example to research culture teaching about appellation taboos.The article includes five parts.The first part is the introduction,which mainly elaborates the significant points of this research.It will also reflect on former research on Cross-cultural Communication,taboo culture,appellations and TCSOL,providing important inspiration for the article.The second part mainly discusses Philippine appellation taboos and their cultural features.Based on the identification,Philippine appellation taboos range from families'appellations to social appellations.The former refers to five kinds of appellation taboos,including age order,family's name,nickname,dead relatives and families' appellations used in social occasion.The latter includes social appellation taboos from both particular and common social fields.The particular social appellation taboos refer to the occupation,titles,discrimination,disabled and curse while the second one is a kind of appellation taboo referring to more people.Besides,it will summarize the cultural characteristics of Philippine appellation taboos,which is prepared for the following analysis about the reason why these taboos come into being.The third part mainly explores the reasons of appellation taboo and the significance of knowing about related culture through cases referring to communication failures between Chinese and Filipino.Firstly,it will list particular cases about Cross-cultural Communication failures caused by appellation taboos between Chinese and Filipino in order to confirm the significant influence of appellation taboo culture during the communication process.Secondly,it will analyze the reasons of Philippine appellation taboos from perspectives of mentality,culture,time and space based on the former cases,taking the similarities and differences between Chinese and Filipino into consideration,which will confirm the necessity of culture teaching about appellation taboos in TCSOL.The fourth part is the most important section,which mainly discusses culture teaching about appellation taboos towards Philippine students in TCSOL.Firstly,it will do an identification survey through questionnaires to confirm the Philippine appellation taboos.Secondly,it will discuss the present circumstance of culture teaching about appellation taboos from both sides of textbook and practical Chinese course in Philippine Xavier School.Thirdly,it will further design detailed teaching plan about appellation taboo culture through Performed Culture Teaching Approach for Philippine Xavier School.Finally,it will provide some suggestions for culture teaching during the process of TCSOL.The fifth part is the conclusion,including the research summary,innovations and deficiencies.
