In the past 40 years of reform and opening up to the outside world,China enjoys a higher and higher level of openness. On that occasion, more and more academic exchanges have been done between Chinese and English-speaking academics.Although increasing number of students speak English nowadays, many of them still cannot fully understand lectures given in English. Therefore, lecture interpreting,as a bridge connecting China and other countries, helps Chinese students and scholars to understand lectures in English better and promotes academic communications. On May 31,Professor James Fishkin was invited to give a lecture on Deliberative Democracy by Institute of China Rural Studies of Central China Normal University, introducing what Deliberative Democracy is and examples of its applications in many countries. The author was the interpreter for this lecture. This report is written on the basis of this lecture's transcript converted from the recording. This report, comparing the transcribed recording with the notes taken during the interpreting, focuses on problems and defects in the process and discusses what the causes are.Referring to deverbalization,it proposes feasible techniques with the expectation to offer new corpus and coping solutions for similar interpreting practice and studies. This report includes 6 chapters. The first chapter is background of the task and lessons and gains the author got through the task.It also includes the rationale of focusing on deverbalization as well as the whole structure of the report. The second chapter is the task process, including pre-interpreting preparation, interpreting process and post-interpreting.In post-interpreting,problems in note-taking and target text will be discussed. The third chapter is theoretical basis, focusing on literature review of Interpretive Theory of Translation and basic principles of ITT since deverbalization is a stage of Interpretive Theory of Translation, offering a comprehensive view of deverbalization. The fourth chapter is informed coping techniques, discussing deverbalization in comprehension,note-taking and in re-expression.Deverbalization in note-taking is realized through information integration and utilization of symbols and abbreviations while deverbalization in re-expression relies on wording alternation, omission, reordering and restructuring. The fifth part is client evaluation and author's self-assessment.The last part is a conclusion of the whole report.
