A Report On C-E Consecutive Interpreting Of The Lecture On Costume Culture Of Thailand

This thesis is a report on C-E consecutive interpreting of the lecture on costume culture of Thailand.The lecture,in which the author was in charge of the C-E consecutive interpreting,was held by the School of International Education of Nanning College for Vocational Technology.The speaker was a Thai who could speak good Chinese and the audiences were teachers and students from different countries such as China,Vietnam,Thailand and America.The interpreting task was completed under the guidance of the Interpretive Theory of Translation.The report provides a detailed analysis of the interpreting cases from the perspective of "de-verbalization".It aims at exploring the application of "de-verbalization" in note-taking and re-expression."De-verbalization" points out that interpreters should be unfettered by the source language and make the interpreting reach the goal of communication.Therefore,it can be used to help the interpreter to explore some effective ways of note-taking in interpreting and find out how to make relevant adjustments in re-expression under the guidance of "de-verbalization" in ways that convey the source information to target audiences in accordance with the habits of the target language.As Chinese characters are multi-stroke,the interpreting would be difficult if the interpreter is trapped by the original form when taking notes.The author finds out that a lot of energy would be saved if interpreters use some symbols or abbreviations.Meanwhile,manifestation of logical relationship in note-taking is conducive to the re-expression.Besides,there are many differences in terms of sentence structure between Chinese and English.So interpreters can use "change of voice","inversion" and other strategies to make some adjustments in re-expression.Furthermore,interpreters sometimes need to use the strategy of "amplification" which can let the audiences be better informed.When the speaker's ability of source language is not relatively strong and she use some gestures to support her ideas,it's necessary for interpreters to de-verbalize the original expression,combine non-verbal symbols with verbal expressions and then deliver the actual meaning the speaker wants to express.The author hopes that the analysis of the cases based on her real practice can shed some enlightenment on other counterparts.She also expects that there will be more people exploring the application of"de-verbalization" in other interpreting fields and providing more effective interpreting strategies.
