The Influence Of Deverbalization On Note-taking In Chinese-English Consecutive Interpretation

Based on “deverbalization”—the core of the Interpretive Theory of Translation,this thesis combines theoretical analysis and empirical study,aiming to explore the influence of “deverbalization” on note-taking in Chinese-English consecutive interpretation.“Deverbalization” refers to shake off the form and expression of the original discourse,discard superfluous words so as to seek the equivalence of the sense,instead of the words.Meanwhile,with the help of Effort Model of consecutive interpretation put forward by Gile,this thesis focuses on whether “deverbalization” will increase the efficiency of note-taking,reduce the energy in the process of notetaking and improve the quality of note-taking and output eventually.This thesis first gives an overview of the full text and introduces the background,the meaning of the research and the research results of “deverbalization”.The theoretical basis of this thesis is “deverbalization” and Effort Model.After the theory introduction,this thesis carries out the empirical study,exploring the influence of “deverbalization” on note-taking and the quality of the output,after which it analyzes the results of the empirical study.The last part draws a conclusion that “deverbalization” can improve the efficiency of note-taking and the quality of output.The material of the empirical study is the keynote speech at the opening ceremony of the Boao Forum for Asia Annual Conference 2018 given by president Xi.Nine students from 4 different universities majoring in interpretation were invited to participate the empirical study.After the empirical study,the conclusion will be drawn according to the detailed analysis of the notes.The conclusion is “deverbalization” can reduce the number of the notes,the time and the energy-consumption of note-taking,and eventually raise the efficiency of notetaking.The higher efficiency of note-taking influences the interpretation,makes the energy better allocated to memorizing,understanding,coordination and production.In conclusion,“deverbalization” can improve the efficiency of note-taking,makes the energy better allocated and facilitates the smooth production.
