A Practice Report On The C-E Consecutive Interpreting Of The Interview On The 40 Years Of Reform And Opening Up From The Perspective Of Communicative Translation

This practice report reports a simulated C-E consecutive interpreting task for an interview on The 40 Years of Reform and Opening up.The interview talks about the development of Chinese films and literature since the implementation of the Reform and Opening up Policy.This practice report applies the approach of communicative translation proposed by Peter Newmark to conduct the interpreting of the interview.This approach,originally meant for written translation,is also highly relevant for interpreting as the major purpose of any interpreting task lies in producing on the target audience an effect as close as possible to that obtained on the audience of the original.In the current case,the purpose is to convey information about Chinese films and literature to target listeners in the way that the intended message can be easily understood.Under the guidance of communicative translation,the author chooses different coping tactics to deal with the following challenges.Firstly,the two interviewees often repeat what has been said and say something that should not be interpreted literally.To address these challenges,omission is adopted to cope with information redundancy and the strategy of addition is employed to explicate the implied information.Secondly,some stories mentioned by the interviewees contain dense information,for which the author applies the strategy of linear interpreting.In addition,the author sometimes reorganizes the sentence structures in an attempt to express the information in a way that better conforms to the rules of target language use.It is hoped that the interpreting coping tactics summarized in this report can be of some help for interpreting learners in coping with similar tasks in the future.
