As one of the important subjects offered by both elementary schools and high middle schools,English plays an important role in the current college entrance examination system.Students will not be admitted if they get a lower mark in English test.Even high-academic achievers will miss a prestigious university only because of their English examination being far from ideal grade,which has a great impact on them.Somehow in ordinary high schools,especially in our school,the number of English underachieving students has increased year by year,and the situation is not optimistic.Therefore,it is necessary for us to explore the causes producing English underachieving students and study relative effective converting strategies deeply.It is beneficial to improve teaching quality and meet the basic requirement of teaching ideas and quality education of the new curriculum reform.Also,it has great realistic significance.Combining with the previous research results,the author takes senior one students of Zhangzhou No.8 Middle School as study subjects and designs questionnaires to find the causes of English underachieving students and analyzes the inner and outer causes from the three aspects: students in themselves,school education and family education.As a result,the author finds out many factors that influence underachievers such as the lack of learning interests and motivation,unscientific learning strategies and weak basic knowledge.The factors include the school lacks a reasonable linking for the transition of English teaching from junior school to high school,and evaluation methods are too simple,and families have little communication with school,and parents don't pay enough attention to their children.From the perspective of employing relevant teaching strategies in class to cultivate students' ability of self-learning after school and emphasizing family education,the author maps out transition strategies in order to convert underachievers accordingly,and meanwhile chooses two students with learning difficulties as a case study and makes a success and finally their performance has been improved.
