Documentary plays an important role in cross-cultural communication, which disseminates the history, culture, customs and values of a country.Documentary is a multimodal unity of story, picture, music, narration and subtitles.Subtitle translation of documentaries is not a simple conversion of text.In addition to adhere to the general principles of bilingual text conversion,it is also influenced by factors such as time, space, pictures, narration and music.Multimodal discourse analysis provides a new perspective for the subtitle translation of documentaries.Unlike film and TV relying on characters to deduce plots, documentaries are mainly composed of pure frame and narration. The plots of the documentaries are mostly flat and straight, coherent and realistic. Therefore, the multimodal factors affecting the subtitles of documentaries are mainly frame and narration. From the perspective of multimodal discourse analysis, this report analyses the translation of the CCTV food documentary Taste. The report combines the single text translation with the documentary production, exploring the specific impacts of multimodal factors, such as story, space, time, and narration,on subtitle translation in the process of documentary production. The report found that under the influence of these multimodal factors, subtitle translation of documentary can adopt the translation methods of omission, inversion, amplification to integrate subtitle, frame and narration, promoting the overall production of documentary. The report analyses each method with specific cases, hoping to provide reference for the subtitle translation of documentaries.
