With the development of China's reform and opening up,cultural exchanges with other countries have become more frequent. As a bridge and means of cross-cultural communication, translation plays an increasingly important role in our daily social life. However, the differences between Chinese and western cultures pose great difficulties and challenges to the translation of culturally-loaded words.Especially in literary works,it is particularly important to faithfully translate culturally-loaded words;because it can help the target readers completely understand the original text and characteristics of the Chinese culture,so as to achieve the better cultural communications. There are a large number of culturally-loaded words in Fei Du written by Jia Pingwa, which has distinct local characteristics of Shaanxi province. At present, the English version of the novel have Ruined City translated by Howard Goldblatt and Professor Hu Zongfeng's unpublished manuscript The Abandoned Capital. This thesis takes these two English versions as the research subject, classifies the culturally-loaded words according to the classification criteria of Eugene A.Nida, and compares the translation methods of them in the two English versions based on the cultural schema theory. The core connotation of cultural schema theory is to pay attention to the transmission between different cultures. The three situations of cultural schema proposed by Professor Liu Mingdong, namely cultural schema correspondence, cultural schema conflict and cultural schema default, provide three research aspects in the translation of cultural schemas.Through the comparative study of the two versions, the author will be able to have a deep understanding of the similarities and differences in translation strategies adopted by translators when translating culturally-loaded words,as well as the factors leading to different translation strategies. Finally, the thesis concludes that the translations of Professor Hu Zongfeng and Howard Goldblatt both have achieved the purpose of spreading Chinese culture and improving Chinese cultural soft power. However,in the translation of the Chineseculturally-loaded words, with a rich Chinese traditional cultural background,Professor Hu Zongfeng's translation strategies are more flexible and faithful to the original text.
