Landslide disasters occur frequently in southwestern and northwestern China due to a variety of factors such as geology, hydrology and soil, which seriously threaten people's daily life and property safety.Similarly,Italy, located near the Alps,is also a landslide-prone area.Foreign geological researchers proposed effective prevention and solutions through long-term investigation into landslide problems in this area. Therefore,it is especially important to make a reasonable assessment of disasters and take preventive measures. The experience of advanced geology abroad can be used as a reference model for dealing with landslide events in China and combined with China's actual situation to minimize disasters. This thesis is a practice report of geological English translation. The first five chapters of the book Landslide Hazard and Risk Assessment introduce the research area, landslide mapping and inventory analysis;the last five chapters focus on risk assessment and prevention. This report is based on the seventh chapter of risk assessment for the translation practice. As a kind of scientific and technological text, geologic English also has the characteristics of professional knowledge, logical composition, complicated information, critical thinking and objective expression.Since the source text contains a large amount of information, the translation should be based on the principle that content is more important than form.Catford's Translation Shift Theory believes that translation is essentially a process of transforming a certain language into another. It tends to analyze sentences from the linguistic level and reorganize the original sentences in the target language. This coincides with the requirements of geologic English translation. Therefore, this thesis deals with the problems encountered in translation process by means of Level Shift and Category Shift, mainly from the analysis of terminology, noun phrases, long complex sentences and passive voice sentences.Through this practice, the author understands the characteristics of geologic English and the essential points to guarantee the translation quality. The text analysis and learning of background knowledge before translation are indispensable, which will greatly improve the translation efficiency. And the quality inspection after translation is better performed by professionals to avoid obstacles in readers' understanding caused by mistranslation of terms. In addition, the Translation Shift Theory analyzes the text from the perspective of linguistics and also helps to improve the quality of translation.
