In the 1980 s,Antoine Berman, first put forward the concept of “translation ethics”.After that, scholars at home and abroad have conducted studies on translation ethics from different perspectives.Among them,Andrew Chesterman's Models of Translation Ethics is the most representative, which has a great significance in academia.Taking the English version of Mo Yan's The Republic of Wine as example, the thesis sorts out and explains translation phenomenon of conscious creative treason by means of the Models,to study the significance of translation ethics on translators' behaviors. The Republic of Wine is a long satire novel written by Mo Yan in 1993.By means of the drink “wine”,it depicts China's officialdom culture and criticizes official corruption. The novel contains a strong flavor of Chinese traditional local culture, and is praised as “the most imaginative and complex Chinese novel” by American Sinologist Howard Goldblatt. In recent years, many scholars have studied the English translation of The Republic of Wine from the perspectives of Rewriting theory and Skopos theory, but few have analyzed the translators' recreation behavior from the perspective of translation ethics combined with creative treason.By the light of Chesterman's Models of Translation Ethics, the thesis attempts to analyze the effect of conscious creative treason adopted by Howard Goldblatt in the process of translating The Republic of Wine and the significance of translated works on target language readers. On the basis of careful reading of the original text and the translated work, this thesis collects and sorts out 30 examples, and focuses on 18 examples for studying. Methods of conscious creative treason adopted by the translator to abide by the translation ethics in the translated work are summarized. This thesis comparatively analyzes specific cases from the original text and the English version. It is concluded that the methods of conscious creative treason adopted by Goldblatt in The Republic of Wine include omission, abridged translation, compiling translation and conscious mistranslation. The applying of conscious creative treason properly complies with the Chesterman's Models of Translation Ethics. In general,Goldblatt's translation of The Republic of Wine is a great success, which has promoted the further spread of Chinese literature in the western society.
