Translation field has been increasingly engaged in the translation of popular science in recent years,which is a blending genre of science and literature and has the characteristics of both.Meanwhile,popular science has specific target.Its main audience is ordinary people,and its aim is to popularize the knowledge in a relatively relaxed way.This report chooses functionalist Skopos theory as the guide for translation,and takes the seventh and eighth chapters of Cold: Extreme Adventures at the Lowest Temperatures on Earth,a book entrusted to translate by SDX Joint Publishing Company,as examples,exploring the feasibility of Skopos theory to guide the translation of popular science.This report consists of four sections.First of all,the author gives overall analyses from the aspects of content,style and language,and discusses the translation principles and mathod of popular science.Then the theoretical framework,namely the Skopos theory,is briefly introduced and an explanation is made to explain why this theory is chosen.After that,based on the three principles of Skopos theory,it analyzes the skills and methods used in the process of translating phrases and sentences(mainly passive sentences and complicated sentences).Finally,certain personal suggestions are given to provide reference for future translation practice...
