Popular science writing belongs to scientific writing. It intends to popularize natural andsocial scientific knowledge. As the economy develops, the government has paid moreatttention to the development of the popular science. More and more excellent popular sciencereadings have been introduced into China as a result of the fast-growing globalization.Therefore, the translation of popular science is of great significance. The purpose of popularscience is to convey the scientific knowledge and cultivate the scientific spirit. Besides,popular science readings possess four unique properties: scientificity, literariness, popularityand interestingness. The original text of the report introduces the social science about spy.Since the translation act of popular science is a highly purposive activity, the Skopos Theoryis approriate in directing the translation process of popular science.The report consists of four chapters: Chapter One is the introduction. It introduces thebackground and significance of the report, describes the project, and maps out the structure ofthe report. Chapter Two presents the source and translated texts to be analyzed in the report.Chapter Three gives a brief introduction to the Skopos Theory: the main contents and thethree rules of the Skopos Theory. Then it presents the analysis of the popular science readingwith the three rules. Chapter Four is the conclusion part. It summarizes the findings of thereport and the deficiencies of the report and expectations for future studies are pointed out.After the analysis of the translated text, the following findings can be concluded:Under the guidance of the skopos rule, the translator is supposed to realize the purpose ofthe popular science readings: popularizing the scientific knowledge. The frequently usedtechnical items and acronyms should be translated correctly and precisely to preserve theaccuracy of the knowledge. The subtitles of the original text are translated in an interestingand vivid way to arouse the readers’ interests.Under the guidance of the intra-textual coherence rule, the coherence is achieved in theaspects of meaning and structure. Annotated translation, amplification and translation toChinese conventions have ensured the original text understood by the target language readers.The translator has made adjustments to passive sentences and long sentences so as to satisfy the needs of the receivers.Under the guidance of the inter-textual coherence rule, the rendition is supposed to befaithful to the source text. At the sentence level, the sequence of some sentences in therendition is exactly the same as that of the original ones, so readers can easily grasp themeaning and inner logic of the sentence. The rendition has adopted four-character idioms topreserve the literary style of the original text.Based on the Skopos Theory, the author tends to conduct a case study, analyzing thetranslated version of popular science reading Eyewitness: Spy with three rules of the SkoposTheory, namely the skopos rule, the intra-textual rule and the inter-textual rule. It aims todraw some instructive conclusions on the translation of popular science based on the SkoposTheory, thus improving the quality of popular science translation.
