The Report On Interpreting Strategies At ExposBased On Interpretive Theory

From July 2 to July 9 in 2018,the 3rd Mount Emei International Tea Culture Expo hosted by Mount Emei Tourism Investment and Development(group)Co.,Ltd is successfully held in Leshan.It provides a platform for Chinese and foreign tea trading and opens a door for the export of Sichuan tea and tea products.During the expo,escort interpreters play a vital role in communicating between different parties.Thus the quality of their interpretation would directly influence the outcome of this expo.In addition,escort interpreting is frequently accompanied with all kinds of emergencies,which requires the high quality of interpreters.Therefore,it is crucial for interpreters to employ appropriate interpreting strategies in the process of interpretation.Interpretive Theory holds that interpreting is a kind of communicative behavior,whose focus is not laid on the correspondence of form but on the equivalence of meaning between source language and target language.Due to the differences in language structure and cultural background between Chinese and English,the interpreter should not be restricted to language forms when interpreting,but pay attention to the meaning of source language,and then reconstruct with target language on the basis of fully understanding the source language.This is the point of interpretive theory,namely “de-verbalization”.This report is based on Interpretive Theory.The author has collected her escort interpreting materials at the “3rd Mount Emei International Tea Culture Expo”.By analyzing the text of the materials,the author summarizes the basic requirements for interpreters at this expo.In addition,by analyzing different cases in this report,the author illustrates three interpreting strategies: “amplification”,“omission”,and “free translation and explanation”.These strategies are frequently adopted by interpreters in practical interpretations,aiming to assist the audience to better understand the information of source language so as to achieve acceptable performance.Therefore these strategies are of great importance to interpreters.In this report,the author hopes to provide some hints for beginners and those who are interested in interpretation when they are doing practical interpretations or learning interpreting.
