A Report On Escort Interpreting For Qingdao Fisheries&Seafood Exposition

With the development of globalization,the increasing economic interactions among countries all over the world have extended into more and more fields,among which fishery,an important part of resource-based industries,has gradually become a prominent realm of international economic exchanges.As the largest and most influential aquatic professional exhibition in Asia,Qingdao Fisheries&Seafood Exposition directly reflects China's important position as the world's largest aquatic product trading country and the most active aquatic product market.Through procedures of recommendation and competition,the author was selected to serve as an escort interpreter in this expo in November,2018.This report is based on the author's interpreting practice in Qingdao Fisheries&Seafood Exposition.During the expo,the author was assigned to provide escort interpreting service to the Canadian delegation,assisting the clients in communication with their partners.Selecting three links such as welcome reception,seminar and customer communication as the objects of case analysis,the author reflects upon the major problems and challenges that were encountered while tackling various interpretation tasks,and meanwhile,by careful comparison and contrast,explores and summarizes the effective interpretation strategies under guidance of the Interpretive Theory.This interpreting practice is characterized by a complex cultural background,a variety of interpretation tasks and a combination of colloquial expressions and professional written languages.In the middle of it,the main challenges fall into three categories:(1)during the banquet and on-site interactions,the interpreter has to assist each side in quickly understanding the other side's intentions as there are giant differences in their cultural backgrounds;(2)when the business negotiation gets stuck in discord,the interpreter has to rise quickly to turn hostility into peace;(3)during the seminar,due to lack of enough professional knowledge,the interpreter has to learn and prepare how to skillfully deliver information accurately and timely under certain time constraints.In response to the above typical problems,the author follows the three-stage theory of the Interpretation Triangle Model in Interpretive Theory—comprehension,de-verbalization and reformulation,and explores appropriate application of the three major strategies—free translation,ellipsis and contextual amplification of target language information—into specific interpreting tasks with diverse characteristics during the expo.The strategies above not only ensure flexible and effective delivery of the information and discourse of both sides of the audience,but also help successfully complete the interpretation task,which are greatly praised by both parties.
