A Practice Report On The English Translation Of “Strength Analysis And Design Of Boiler Pressure Elements” (Excerpt)

With the promotion of international status,the translation of sci-technology textbooks to English becomes an important activity.Due to the cultural differences between Chinese and Western readers,the sci-technology textbooks translation should be reasonably adapted according to the needs of readers so as to be easily understood by them.Translation variation theory is characterized by variation and reader-centered,which is the most effective form of strategy in cultural translation.This paper explores the principles and strategies of English translation of the scitechnology textbooks on the basis of translation variation theory with “Strength Analysis and Design of Boiler Pressure Elements”(Excerpt)as the case study.This paper analyzes five variation methods in translation: 1)expansion—expanding related words and expanding explanatory words,2)deletion—deleting category words and lowering grammatical complexity,3)edition—editing parallel sentences and editing formula sentences,4)commentary—reorganizing transitivity and paraphrasing complex sentences,5)reformation—reforming the structure of discourse and mathematical symbols.Combined with the characteristics of English and Chinese textbooks,it is found that in the English translation of sci-technology textbooks,it is necessary to adopt reasonable variable means to make a translation that is easy to understand,concise and clear,fluent in writing and beautiful in typesetting.The paper uses translation variation theory to explore translation strategies and skills,and verifies the feasibility of translation variation theory in English translation of sci-technology textbooks.Translation variation theory is put forward by Chinese scholars,which is also helpful to promote the localization of translation theory.The paper breaks through the translation of words and sentences level,and further explores how the translator can make the variation translation at the text level in order to achieve satisfactory translation results among the original work and the translator and the reader.
