An E-C Translation Report On CNN Website Business News (Excerpts) From The Perspective Of Translation Variation Theory

Business news is an important channel for people to get advanced business information around the world,which belongs to informative texts.This practice report selects 12 news reports from the business column of CNN’s official website,focuses on the difficulties encountered in the translation process,and applies the corresponding variation means under the guidance of Translation Variation Theory,thus disseminating accurate and effective business information for domestic readers.Based on the function of informative texts,this report analyzes the characteristics of the source text from three levels:lexical,syntactic and textual level,summarizes the principles of English business news translation:accuracy,readability and brevity,and concludes that the translation difficulties come from the lack of specific background knowledge and text readability,among which the lack of specific background knowledge is reflected in the translation of proper nouns,and the lack of text readability is reflected in the translation of headlines,long sentences and the inverted pyramid structure.The Translation Variation Theory emphasizes on giving full play to the translator’s subjectivity and using variation means to meet the special needs of readers.Therefore,according to this theory,appropriate variation means are applied:(1)In proper nouns translation,amplification and deletion are adopted to increase background knowledge and eliminate secondary identity information;(2)In headlines translation,amplification is applied by using the four-character structure and appropriately adding details to arouse readers’interest in reading;(3)In long sentences translation,edition and deletion are used to divide the structure of long sentences and reorganize the word order,thus enhancing the readability of the translation;(4)In the inverted pyramid structure translation,combination and edition are mainly adopted to combine similar meanings or logically related parts,thus strengthening the coherence and logic of the content.Through this report,the author hopes to provide reference for the subsequent translation of business news and the application of Translation Variation Theory in business news translation.
