George Steiner's hermeneutics exerts a great influence on translation, with a core point that a process of translation is a process of understanding and interpretation.Steiner believes that translation is based on understanding and consists of four steps: trust, aggression, incorporation and restitution. It plays a very important guiding role in translation. This paper takes When We Were Young—New Perspective on the Art of the Child(When We Were Young)as an example to analyze the application of Steiner's hermeneutic motion in translation practice. When We Were Young is an art review edited by Jonathan Feinberg.Experts and scholars have put forward their own ideas and views on child's art in this book. And there are many illustrations of child's paintings for reference. The original works are very rigorously-arranged with expressive thoughts and eye-catching colorful illustrations;words and paintings complement each other, making a very readable book.In a word, this work is helpful for people to understand the history and development of child's art and their inner feelings.According to the actual translation process of the practice, the translator finds that the center and the difficulty through all are those ubiquitous long and difficult sentences. The translator divides those sentences into three major parts: complex modifiers, complicated logic and inversion, which are then further-branched in the case studies with corresponding analysis carried out.In order to better solve these problems, this report makes a preliminary study and analysis of the translation process of long and difficult sentences in the selected text from theperspective of Steiner's hermeneutic motion. In the analysis process of selected cases, the translator finds that established trust is the foundation of text translation;aggression and incorporation of the contents and forms of the text are the key parts;restitution is also indispensable. But when it comes to specific cases, there may be differences in using any of them. This report concludes that Steiner's hermeneutic motion is of great guiding significance for the translation of long and difficult sentences. The translator has gained a lot from the professional practice and training, which will be helpful for the future work.
