A Case Study Of Cognitive Equivalence Of The E-C Translation Of Metaphors In Financial English

With the deepening of economic globalization,Chinese people pay more and more attention to the economic information and some financial English periodicals have been introduced into China.The Economist is one of the most popular periodicals in China.There are a lot of metaphors in its passages to describe economic states and financial issues,which impose difficulties to translators.Based on the passages of Financial and Economic English column in The Economist,this thesis puts the economic metaphors in the cultural and cognitive model of source language and target language,and translates them under the conceptual metaphor theory(CMT).To achieve the objective of translation,this thesis adopts Metaphor Identification Procedure Vrije Universiteit(MIPVU)to find metaphors from the materials of financial English.Then the thesis classifies these metaphors based on the source domains of metaphors,analyzes the mapping mechanism and summarizes the features of economic metaphors.Based on the cognition,understanding and analysis of metaphors in financial English,this thesis aims to analyze the cognitive process of metaphor translation and propose four translation methods based on the cases analysis of translation practice: retaining the original concept;retaining the original concept plus annotation;replacing the original concept with a different concept;rephrasing the metaphorical concept.This thesis explores the equivalence of metaphor translation in financial English from a cognitive perspective.It has certain significancefor the understanding of metaphor and the decision and expressions of the translator.Meanwhile,it also hopes to provide practical reference value for the translation of metaphor in financial English.
