A Study On The China And Belgium Negotiated Abolition In The Period Of The Beijing Government Of The Republic Of China

The "China-Belgium Treaty" signed in 1865 is one of many unequal treaties.In 1926,the Beijing government of the Republic of China made several representations with Belgium when the treaty was over the sixth decade,and finally announced the abolition of the unequal treaties.The academic community has done a lot of research on this,but in the process of negotiations between the two sides,the formation of the Chinese abolition policy needs further study.China was deeply damaged by the unequal treaties.At the time when the China-Belgium Treaty was about to expire,in order to fight for national sovereignty,the government first proposed a request to amend the treaty for Belgium.The Chinese proposal was immediately rejected by the analogy that "only the Belgian side has the right to propose a repair." With the support of the people,after many negotiations,Belgium agreed to sign a new treaty with China.In the course of negotiations between the two countries,Belgium wasn?t guilty of harm to its interests in China.It proposes that after the expiration of the Previous treaty,a temporary approach should be formulated before the signing ofthe new testament.China and Belgium have fundamental differences on the content and duration of the provisional measures.After recognizing that the fundamental purpose of Belgium was to continue to maintain the privileges in China,the Beijing government announced the abolition of the Sino-Belgian Treaty on November 6,1926.It has created a precedent for China's unilateral abolition of unequal treaties.China's announcement of the abolition of the contract has caused a sensation at home and abroad.People from all walks of life in China are more excited than overseas Chinese to see China's hope of getting rid of unequal treaties,while Western powers have reacted differently because of the complexity of their interests.Belgium filed a lawsuit requesting the International Court of Justice to decide on the dispute between China and Belgium on treaty issues.For this reason,the Chinese side hired foreign public law experts to actively respond.Due to the change in the attitude of the western countries,Belgium lost its original support and had to withdraw the lawsuit and continue negotiations with China.Shortly after the opening of the new testament negotiations,with the continuous advancement of the Northern Expedition,with the demise of theBeijing government of the Republic of China,the negotiations between China and Belgium on the signing of the New Testament were finally put on hold.The Beijing government of the Republic of China for the abolition of the Sino-Belgian Treaty and Belgium's negotiations is complex in nature and characterized.People have different opinions on the abolition of the treaty by the Beijing government,and we should recognize and analyze it with an objective attitude.As later generations,we should also draw lessons from it and learn from it.
