During the period of the Republic of China, social unrest and internal and external troubles were in a transitional period.During this period, the abnormal development of prostitution and the large number of prostitutes brought about serious problems and became a chronic social disease. With the development and progress of society, the voice of calling for the liberation of women is rising. The problem of prostitution, which hinders woman's liberation, has aroused widespread concern of the government and public opinion. Many people call for the abolition of the prostitution system. As the most widely distributed and influential Chinese commercial newspaper in modern times,Shun Pao focused on the issue of prostitutes from the very beginning of its publication, and reported a lot of content related to prostitutes, with the aim of paying attention to the national economy and people's livelihood. In 1918,after some domestic organizations initiated activities to request the abolition of prostitution,Shun Pao paid long-term attention and expressed its thinking.Shun Pao reports more on the promulgation of policies and the campaign of abolishing prostitution in major cities such as Shanghai,Nanjing,Guangzhou,Beijing and other cities. These include the preparatory work before abolishing prostitution in various places, such as holding preparatory meetings to discuss the regulations for abolishing prostitution, investigating the number of prostitutes, building Jiliang Houses, etc.and the proposals of various policies in the abolition campaign, such as drawing lots by stages to abolish prostitution, testing the disease of willows and abolishing the donations of prostitutes,as well as the actual situation and results of the abolition campaign carried out in.Shun Pao also publishes Shun Pao itself and people of insight's thoughts on abolition of prostitution in the form of editorial. It mainly includes three aspects:first,it analyses the harm of prostitution, including the harm of sexually transmitted diseases to people's health, moral degradation, family harmony, disruption of life order and social stability. It emphasizes the campaign of abolition of prostitution.Necessity of abolishing prostitution;secondly,it puts forward its own thinking on Abolishing prostitution measures, advocating strengthening public opinion propaganda of abolishing prostitution, severely punishing those who buy and sell prostitutes, banning public prostitution and private prostitution at the same time, solving woman's livelihood problems;finally,it probes into the reasons for the failure of abolishing prostitution, and holds that the bad social atmosphere, imperfect abolition policy, corrupt official Defeat. The comment of Shun Pao's editorial reflects its idea of running newspapers with people's livelihood concern and intellectuals'feelings for the country and the people.Shun Pao not only reports on the abolition of prostitution movement, but also launches related theories. On the one hand,it vigorously disseminates health knowledge, strives to maintain social weathering and actively promotes woman's liberation.Obviously,it is conducive to promoting the formulation of abolition of prostitution policy and the development of abolition of prostitution movement, which has had a certain impact and played a better role in public opinion prop On the other hand, due to the commercial nature of Shun Pao,which influences its deep attention to the abolition of prostitution,as well as the political situation, traffic and communications, and competition among other publications, the actual dissemination effect of public opinion on abolition of prostitution in Shun Pao is not satisfactory.
