| Simultaneous interpreting(SI)is more and more frequently used in international conferences,forums and seminars as it takes less time and it's more feasible for multilingual interpreting.It paves a way for the increasing international communication.It is also considered as one of the most challenging jobs as the interpreter has to engage in many tasks at the same time.Therefore,many strategies,including compression strategy etc.,are used to successfully accomplish the communication goal in simultaneous interpreting.Compression strategy is a linguistic coping strategy and a time and labour-saving device for simultaneous interpreters to cope with condensed messages and cognitive loads in the extreme conditions.It was originally proposed by Russian interpreting expert Ghelly V.Chernov.He divided compression into five categories: syllabic compression,lexical compression,syntactic compression,semantic compression and situational compression.Based on the simulated simultaneous interpreting of the Potato Industry Forum of the 2016 China Potato Expo,this report will analyze how Chernov's compression strategy is applied in Chinese-English SI for coping with cognitive loads to achieve brevity and clarity for the target language and realize an effective communication.The report consists of five chapters.Chapter One is the transcript of the source speech and interpretation.Chapter Two explains the source,requirements and expected results of the interpreting task.Chapter Three describes the whole interpreting process in detail.Chapter Four analyzes the application of compression strategy in this task.Chapter Five gives an overall summary of this task,including the lessons learned,the problems and enlightenment for future studies and work. |
