A Report On The Translation Of Considerations And Best Practices For Developing Cultural Competency Models In Applied Work Domains

Recently,with the rapid development of economy,individuals,enterprises and organizations are not satisfied with the progress of self-independence,but follow the trend of globalization.The translator was entrusted by a professor of School of Management to translate the third chapter of a monograph,named Considerations and Best Practices for Developing Cultural Competency Models in Applied Work Domains.The translation is expected to help them understand the development of competency models in western countries and complete the relevant researches.This report emphasizes the study of syntactic translation based on Toury's translation norms.It mainly analyzes the features and syntactic structure of four kinds of sentence patterns,including passive voice,attributive clauses,object clauses and adverbial clauses.Besides,it puts forward corresponding translation skills and concludes as follows: 1)Passive voice,widely existing in English academic papers,cannot be simply translated into a sentence with Chinese character “?”.Based on the norms,three skills could be adopted,embracing the shift from the passive voice to the active,with a change of subject;the shift from the passive voice to the active,with no change of subject,and the shift from passive voice to a subjectless sentence.2)Combination,division and integrated skills are employed to translate attributive clauses.3)For object clauses,there are two translation skills utilized,including sequencing and conversion.4)Two translation skills are applied to deal with the adverbial clauses,consisting of sequencing and restructuring.Based on the translation norms,this report summarizes the translation skills of common sentence patterns from the syntactic level,which has certain practical significance.At the same time,this project is also meaningful for domestic scholars to know more about the research progress of foreign cultural competency models.
