China is presently in an important transformation period of society. At this juncture the development of social circumstances, especially that of social strata changes, draw much attention. However, there are not many translations of social stratification in China and the general quality is not satisfactory enough.Faced with the problem the writer selects as the translation content the fifth chapter of the book Sociological Footprints,co-authored by Leonard Cargan and Jeanne H.Ballantine and analyses the material based on Skopos Theory,in order to discuss the difficulties in translating such texts, which are highly theoretical as well as scholastic, and the means to handle them properly. The report is divided into four parts. The first part describes the translation project, focusing on the source and characteristics of translation materials,as well as the purpose and significance of the translation practice. The second part introduces the complete translation process, including the pre-translation preparation, the translation progress and the post-translation review. The third part elaborates Skopos Theory and analyzes specific cases, which involves various translation techniques and approaches to the problems in a targeted manner. The fourth part summarizes the translation practice.By exploring how to translate these kinds of texts under the guidance of Skopos Theory, the report aims to provide some reference and assistance for the future translation.
