This translation report is based on the first to third chapters of An Introduction to Sociolinguistics(Third edition). This is a classic textbook which focuses on the introduction of sociolinguistics and covers a wide range of linguistic knowledge. The selected translation contains the nature, scope, and research methods of the subject, language, dialect, and varieties, pidgin and creole languages. It belongs to informative material. The translator mainly used Eugene A.Nida's functional equivalence theory as the guiding theory. In translation, she chose communicative translation as the main translation strategy supplemented by semantic translation and applied translation techniques such as semantic extension, conversion, division and combination in order to achieve functional equivalence in lexical, syntactic, discourse and cultural dimensions. The original text involves many proper nouns, and long and complex sentences. Therefore,in chapter four the translator selected typical examples to analyze, and summarized the existing deficiencies and gains in translating the chapters.By translating this text, the translator has had a relatively comprehensive understanding of sociolinguistics, consolidated translation skills, experienced the process of translation, and improved her translation. And the translated text can be a reference for English learners and linguistic researchers.
