Under the background of increasingly frequent global exchanges, films and TV series,as a carrier of culture, have brought new information and entertainment. In the hope of improving acceptance of foreign cultures in China and promoting cultural exchanges between China and other countries, subtitle translation shows its importance. However, traditional subtitle translation only stays at the language level, but ignores the existence of non-verbal symbol resources in this type of discourse. In fact,in the process of film and television translation,in addition to language, music, color, movement, sound effects and other forms of discourse have their own functions in meaning construction and directly affect the translation of subtitles. The study of multimodal discourse analysis emerged in the 1990s,which is based on the theory of systemic functional linguistics proposed by Halliday.Kress&Van leeuwen applies this theory into other symbolic systems besides language system. In recent years, with the advancement of science and technology, various new media emerged to meet human beings' requirements. The research focus of multimodal discourse analysis has shifted from the original single modality to multimodality and has been applied to various types of texts. From the perspective of multimodal discourse analysis, this thesis takes two versions of subtitles of the British TV series Sherlock as research object. The detailed analysis is mainly divided into two levels.By discussing the meanings of multimodal discourse such as linguistic modality, visual modality and audio modality in subtitle translation and the relationships between them, how does multimodal discourse achieves meaning construction in subtitle translation has been explained in this thesis. Finally, the research proposes three suggestions for subtitle translation from the perspective of multi-modality:(1)supplementing or reducing information according to the dominant modalities;(2)condensing or moving subtitles to ensure coordination of various modalities;(3)using punctuation to express untranslatable elements in audiovisual textsThe thesis applies multimodal discourse analysis theory into the field of subtitle translation, attempting to broaden its application range. It proposes a more specific multimodal analysis framework based on the integrated framework of multimodal discourse analysis, providing a new research perspective for subtitle translation.
