A Survey Report On The Use Of Translation Technology By Translators In China

As globalization continues to deepen and information technology develops vigorously,the dissemination of information is accelerating,the scale of the translation market has expanded rapidly,and the development of translation industry has picked up great momentum.The advancement of technologies such as big data,cloud computing and artificial intelligence has also brought about tremendous changes in the content,methods,and processes of translation activities.The new translation economy in the digital age mainly focuses on the three elements of quantity,time and cost of translation,and technology is the key to coping with them.Translation technology has changed the traditional translation model,improved translation efficiency and enhanced the overall productivity of the translation industry.Therefore,mastering translation technology has become a must-have skill for translators.With the increasingly prominent role of translation technology in the translation industry,translation technology has gradually attracted the attention of the academic community.By reading relevant literature,the author finds that domestic scholars' researches on translation technology mainly center on theoretical research,application of translation technology related tools,translation teaching,industry development,etc.There is a lack of empirical data on the uptake of translation technology by translators.Therefore,in order to find out the adoption of translation technology by translators in China,the author investigated the use of five representative translation technologies,namely,machine translation,computer-aided translation,terminology management system,quality assurance tool,and translation management system through questionnaire survey.In so doing,the author hopes to provide a reference for the development and teaching of translation technology.This paper specifically answers the following questions:(1)What is the attitude of translators towards translation technology?(2)How frequently do the translators use the above translation technology tools?(3)What are the resistance factors for translators' adoption of translation technology?(4)What are the needs of translators for translation training?According to the survey,the surveyed translators generally recognize the importance of translation technology.Most of the respondents agree that translation technology can help improve translation efficiency,enhance translation quality,increase translation income and expand translation business.However,the survey shows that although using machine translation has become the norm for most respondents,computer-aided translation tools,terminology management tools,quality assurance tools and translation management systems are only used by a small proportion of subjects,indicating that the use of technology is not consistent with their perception of translation technology;their little knowledge of the translation technology is identified as the main reason behind their non-adoption or seldom use of translation technology;most of the subjects are willing to improve their technical competence,but think that the current training opportunities are not sufficient.Based on the above findings,the author has made some suggestions for MTI institutions and translators themselves,and hopes to provide a reference for follow-up researches.
