As a shining pearl in ancient Chinese literature,Ci poems with smooth rhythm and colorful patterns narrate the social life and spiritual world of human beings together with poetry. They originated in the Sui Dynasty, formed in the Tang Dynasty and flourished in the Song Dynasty.Li Yu creates a school of his own in Ci poem history, which maintains the beautiful and emotional style of Huajian Ci in the Tang Dynasty as well as the graceful and melancholy style of Wan Yue Ci in the Song Dynasty. The exploration of image translation in Li Yu’s Ci poems is not only conducive to the development of the study of Chinese Ci poetry translation but also helpful to strengthen “Chinese cultural self-confidence”.Based on the Gestalt principles in Gestalt psychology, this thesis studies how image-G actualizes in the translation process.By analyzing the translated version in Zhu Manhua’s Complete Collection of Li Yu’s Poetry, this thesis analyzes first from the heterogeneous isomorphism principle, then from the closure principle and the wholeness principle. Our major findings are:1.Gestalt psychology has interpretive and guiding significance for image-G actualization. With Gestalt theory,we can better understand, analyze and explain the translation of Ci poems, and provide a new approach for the study of poetry translation.2.The application of Gestalt theory can promote the translation to retain the artistic value and linguistic charm of Ci poems.Heterogeneous isomorphism principle in Gestalt requires the appeal of the original text and the comprehensive understanding of the translator adjust each other in the dynamic process of perception, using literal translation and replacing so that the force of poetic quality in the original language and the force of aesthetic perception in the target language can be isomorphic in structure.Closure principle guides translators to use explicitation and amplification to enrich and complete the blank left by the poet deliberately and to give full play to their initiative, creating their Gestalt.Wholeness principle provides a clear scientific basis for us to study the translator’s thinking activities. From a holistic view, conversion, free translation, and annotation are applicable in translating Ci poems for translators.
