The Effect Of Tolerance Of Uncertainty On The Emotion Regulation Flexibility In Adults

The emotion regulation flexibility refers to the flexible choice of emotion regulation strategy and regulation goal according to the needs of emotion situation,in order to achieve better emotion regulation effect.The different levels of flexibility of emotion regulation reflect the performance of individuals in dealing with uncertainty,and it is a challenge to uncertainty.The attitude and behavior response on individuals when facing uncertain events or situations showing differences,Show varying degrees of tolerance and acceptance.That is,different individuals have different "tolerance of uncertainty ",which reflects the response tendency of individuals to deal with uncertainty.The emotional response is the most obvious among the series of consequences of uncertainty tolerance.According to the theory of uncertainty reinforcement,uncertainty will lead to extreme emotional distribution and difficulty in emotion regulation.Low levels of emotion regulation flexibility are often associated with high anxiety,depression,and so on.Will the emotion regulation flexibility be affected by the tolerance of uncertainty? In the face of uncertainty,what is the performance of emotional regulation flexibility in individuals with different uncertainty tolerance?In this paper,two studies were conducted to investigate the relationship between the tolerance of uncertainty and emotion regulation flexibility.The first study is an investigation study,a preliminary probe on the relational relationship between the two factors.A total of 635 adults were investigated with the IUS-12 and the emotion Regulation flexibility scale.The results show that there is a significant negative correlation between the intolerance of uncertainty and the emotion regulation flexibility,and the tolerance of uncertainty can significantly predict the level of emotion regulation flexibility.The second study used the experimental method,including three sub-experiments,based on the three-component model of emotional regulation flexibility,combined with emotional regulation objectives.According to the time processes of emotion regulation,the experiment was carried out sequentially,and the influence of the tolerance of uncertainty on the emotion regulation flexibility was discussed from three aspects: situation,strategy and goal feedback.The results show as follow:(1)When the emotional situation clue is clear,the pleasure degree of using cognitive reassessment strategy is higher;when the situational clue is uncertain,the pleasure degree of using distraction strategy is higher.Under the condition of distractionstrategy,the pleasure level of the low tolerance of uncertainty group was higher than that of the high tolerance of uncertainty group.The arousal degree after using cognitive reassessment strategy was higher than that after using distraction strategy,and when the situational clue was not clear,the arousal degree of the subjects was also significantly higher than that under the condition that the situational clue was clear.(2)When the target picture was neutral,the subjects reacted more quickly under the condition that the target stimulus clue was determined,while when the target picture was negative,the subjects reacted more quickly under the condition that the target stimulus clue was uncertain.The low tolerance of uncertainty group was more inclined to choose distraction strategy,and the high tolerance of uncertainty group was more inclined to choose cognitive reevaluation strategy.(3)When identifying neutral stimuli,the subjects reacted more quickly under the condition that the target stimulus clue was clear.When identifying negative stimuli,the subjects were more agile under the condition of uncertain target stimulus cues.Whether the stimulus titer was neutral or negative,the high toleranc of uncertainty group was faster when the clue was not clear,while for the low tolerance of uncertainty group,when the stimulus was neutral,it was faster under definite conditions,and when the stimulus was negative,When the clue is not clear,it is faster.when the target stimulus clue was not clear,The correct rate of high tolerance of uncertainty group was significantly higher than that of low tolerance of uncertainty group,and those with low tolerance of uncertainty were more likely to regard neutral stimuli under uncertain cues as negative stimuli.The above results show that,the emotion regulation flexibility is affected by the tolerance of uncertainty.The tolerance of uncertainty plays a regulatory role in the influence of uncertain situations(emotional situation,emotional intensity,and emotional potency)on the emotional regulation flexibility to a certain extent.
