A Report On Note-taking Ability Training Practice Under The Guidance Of Effort Model

In the process of consecutive interpreting,the quality of note-taking depends on whether the consecutive interpreting can be smoothly proceeded or not.During the consecutive interpreting,the interpreter needs to interpret nearly 9,000 words per hour while what the speaker delivers is of immediacy,where the interpreter must be very skillful in information recording,mentally or physically—note-taking that both methods are important to most of the occasions.In the very limited time,the interpreter should have a full comprehension of the source language and interprets the whole information into target language.In this process,note-taking has become an important auxiliary method as a reminder.Note-taking can record the key information and logical relations of the speech which is very helpful for the interpreter in consecutive interpreting.This report mainly analyzes the problems and causes of the author's interpreting note-taking practice and proposes ways to improve the corresponding shortcoming,the author take the speech of Bill Gates at Peking University in 2017 and some videos from paragraph interpreting part of figure interpreting training section in kekenet.com as the practice material,under the guidance of Gile's Effort Model of consecutive interpreting,the author mainly analysis the problems existing in three note-taking training practice from the aspect of personal symbol system,terminology preparation,figure note-taking and processing capacity and note-taking equilibration,in order to find some methods to improving the quality of note-taking.By analyzing the process of the task and case study,the report draws the following conclusions: 1.Symbols play an important role in note-taking and proper symbols can be helpful in save the interpreter's effort.2.Logical relations in note-taking directly affect the fluency of the target-language production that is vital to take notes logically.3.The interpreter has to put a lot of effort in figures and terminologies so whether the interpreter can smoothly record the figures and terminologies or not is key factor to the quality of note-taking.4.The effort imbalance in the process of interpreting will lead to low-quality of note-taking.Appropriate distribution of effort is a necessary ability for a qualified the interpreter.In order to settle the problems above,this report puts forward corresponding methods and strategies to improve the quality of note-taking.
