A Survey Report On The Causes Of Interpreting Anxiety And Its Coping Strategies

Since the emergence of interpreting,the relative researches have been carried out on many topics.In the past several decades,the researches on interpreting anxiety have been one of the focuses.These researches mainly paid attention to the causes of interpreting anxiety of either trainee or professional interpreters and coping strategies.However,they ignored the fact that the causes of and the coping strategies of interpreting anxiety will vary in different stages.At the very beginning of the research,the author raised several questions: what are the causes of interpreting anxiety? What should we do to avoid their negative influence on the interpreting performance? And what is the correlation between the causes of interpreting anxiety and the anxiety level of interpreters? With these research questions,this research aims to figure out causes of interpreting anxiety and its coping strategies,so as to help trainee interpreters improve their interpreting skills and related qualities,which enable them to better adapt to the real conditions.To collect and analyze the data of the research,the author adopted the Wenjuanxing online questionnaire system and the SPSSAU online data analysis tool.The frequency analysis,the descriptive analysis and the correlation analysis on the data collected by the questionnaire were carried out.The questionnaire designed for this research includes twenty statements for each respondent,and their choices on these items can reflect their attitudes toward different conditions frequently encountered in interpreting training and work,which constitute specific causes of interpreting anxiety.According to the data reflected by the questionnaire,the interpreting anxiety level of both trainee and professional interpreters is influenced by similar causes,such as memory ability,psychological quality,audience,preparation for the interpreting task and so on.These factors are the major causes of interpreting anxiety,so we are supposed to find coping strategies accordingly.Although this research still has limitations,the major findings of the research can explain part of the causes of interpreting anxiety of the respondents,which can provide practical guidance for trainee interpreters,helping them to find correct methods to strengthen their interpreting ability.
